Hugh is a lawyer with Willis Law in Edmonton and frequently speaks on condominium issues in Alberta. He volunteers for CCI North including participating in stakeholder sessions on amendments to the Condominium Property Act amongst other matters. He is also a mentor for the Law Society of Alberta for lawyers with condominium law questions.

Hugh Willis was called to the Alberta bar in 2005. He is a graduate of the University of Alberta Faculty of Law, class of 2004. In 2000, Hugh completed his undergraduate degree in the Applied Energy Program at the University of Calgary Department of Economics, where he graduated with Dean’s List standing.

In addition to his ability to communicate complex legal issues in plain language, Hugh prides himself on providing his clients efficient and practical legal advice.

Hugh was also selected by his peers for inclusion in the 2024 Best Lawyers magazine for the area of commercial litigation, marking the fourth consecutive year of this recognition.

Hugh has also appeared before the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Court of Queen’s Bench, the Provincial Court of Alberta, the Immigration and Refugee Board and the Immigration Appeal Division.

Erin Berney is a partner with Field Law in Edmonton. She has experience working with all manner of residential, commercial, industrial, and resort-style condominiums, including successfully litigating various matters on behalf of condominium corporations and unit owners.

Erin focuses on education and dispute avoidance/resolution by advising boards, managers, and owners to manage expectations, improve communications, and avoid problems before they occur.

Her experience includes bylaw amendment and rule/policy development, insured losses, enforcement/litigation, capital repairs/replacements/improvements, foreclosures, condo loans, plan amendments, and navigating the countless difficult situations that arise in condominiums.

Erin has owned a condo in downtown Edmonton since 2005 and currently serves on the Board as Privacy Officer. Erin is looking forward to anticipated future amendments of the Act and Regulations, including the creation of a dispute resolution tribunal.

In his litigation practice, Todd has successfully argued cases in all levels of court

in Alberta as well as in the Supreme Court of Canada. Todd acts for Condominium Corporations, Unit Owners and industry particpants, as required.

When involved in condominium disputes that he is unable to resolve directly, Todd has successfully utilized either the Court of King’s Bench or Arbitration.

Todd represents and advises Condominium Corporations and managers

regarding various legal matters including responding to or dealing with

unreasonable unit owners. He also represents condominium unit owners address

various legal matters, including to responding to or dealing with unreasonable

Boards.

As such, through nearly 25 years of practice Todd has honed his skills

of diplomacy by attending condominium general meetings and information

meetings with angry unit owners, angry board members and angry combinations

of the two.

I have served on multiple Boards, participated in CCI committees at the local and

national level, and presented at CCI courses, sessions and conferences.

I have been involved in CCI, as a Board member and volunteer, for a long time

and now feel very interested in its ongoing success.

Michael Gibson maintains a diverse practice primarily focusing on condominium and real estate law, corporate/commercial law, with a focus on cooperatives, and municipal law. In addition to his busy practice, Michael teaches Condominium Law at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law.

Michael has a wide range of experience assisting condominium developers, condominium corporations and boards, managers, and owners with the unique challenges they face in the development, management, and operation of new and existing condominium projects. Michael has appeared as counsel before the Provincial Court of Alberta, the Court of Queen’s Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal and various regulatory boards and tribunals, including the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board.

On the corporate side of his practice, Michael has experience advising both condominium and cooperative boards on governance matters, incorporating new cooperatives and advising on membership and owner issues, including oppression and termination remedies.

Michael also teaches various courses and seminars at the Canadian Condominium Institute, and has also been invited to talk at numerous business conferences and as a guest lecturer in the University of Alberta, Faculty of Business and Concordia University of Edmonton.
